E - Waste-new hazards-killing the poor.

Toxic chemicals found in electronic waste severely affect the health of rag pickers who dismantle computers and mobile phones for precious metals.

Few statistics are known about the informal e- waste industry, but a United Nations report launched in February describes how mountains of hazardous waste from electronics are growing exponentially in India.

It said India would have 500 percent more e-waste from old computers in 2020 than in 2007, and 18 times more old mobile phones.

Toxic metals and poisons enters the blood stream during the laborious manual extraction process and when equipment is crudely treated to collect tiny quantities of precious metals. The amount of metals they extract a retraces-fractions of a milligram.

There are no estimates of how many people die from e- waste poisoning as ill workers move back to their villages when they can no longer work.

The government has proposed a law to regulate the e-waste trade. The proposed law says only big firms should be in the business of recycling and dismantling. But this is not going to work because the informal sector already has a cheap system of collection, disposal or recycling in place-so people use that.

Solar plane makes historic flight.

An experimental solar-powered aircraft launched on Wednesday has landed safely in Switzerland after successfully flying through the night.

An experimental solar powered aircraft HB-SIA prototype airplane took off from a swiss air base in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8th, 2010.

The aircraft used super-efficient solar cells and batteries to stay in the air after the Sun's rays had faded.

“This should be a great day if all goes well,” said team chief Bertrand piccard, who made the first non-stop round-the-world flight in a balloon more than a decade ago. He added ,” The goal is to take to the air with no fuel. The goal is to show that we can be much more independent from fossil energy than people usually think.”

Previous flights of Solar Impulse have included a brief "flea hop" and a longer airborne test earlier this year. But this week's attempt was described as a "milestone" by the team.

The test flight was a major step toward the makers' aim of circling the globe using the power of the Sun to fuel the plane.

The plane touched down at an airfield about 30 miles (50 km) from the Swiss capital Bern at 0900 (0700 GMT). That was the moment that proved the mission was successful, we made it."

The plane emerged from the darkness of night with three hours power remaining in its batteries, more than had been expected.

"Nothing can prevent us from another day and night, and the myth of perpetual flight."

The team will now build a new, more advanced, model of the plane. They aim to circumnavigate the globe by 2013.

The go-ahead will depend on the sun’s ability to charge up solar impulse’s batteries in the day time and the threat of strong high-altitude winds.

Learning through E - Way .

The traditional way of teaching has taken a back seat .Many schools have done beyond chalk and black board .After every class, lessons taught on that day are recorded online. This is beneficial for the absentees who are unable to attend school for a long time & also for the regular students who fail to grasp a concept in class can go through the online notes later.

Here teachers can come online & can student’s doubts through chat.

To get more involved, fortnightly modules, question papers and answer banks are uploaded. Parents love this system because it keeps them abreast with all that happens in school. It makes them tech-savvy too.

Though system is catching pace, many parents are of the opinion that it reduces interest in writing & reading. Well, whether you love or hate it , you can’t ignore it.
