Akshaya Tritiya falls in Hindu calendar month of vaishaka (this year it falls on May 16, 2010).It is believed that Treta Yuga began on this day.
The word Akshaya means “never diminishing ” in sansktit.Therefore people believe in investing in gold, new ventures are started on this auspicious day.
It is also celebrated as the birth day of parashrurame, the sixth avatara of God Vishnu.It is considered auspicious to buy assets like gold, silver and immovable property.
In recent years, buying gold has become a common feature.
Kubera (the treasurer of Gods according to Hinduism) is said to pray to Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth ) on this day.
The rituals consists of Gana Homa, Navagraha Homa, Lakshmi pooja & chanting if shanty Mantras.
In recent years, people have started launching new business, fixing dates for marriages, Bhoomi Pooia, House warming ceremonies etc, are celebrated on this day.
